l-Theanine, a non-proteinaceous amino acid abundantly present in tea (Camellia sinensis), contributes to the umami flavor of tea and has beneficial effects on human health. While key l-theanine biosynthetic genes have been well documented, their transcriptional regulation remains poorly understood.
