Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-associated degradation (ERAD) removes misfolded proteins from the ER membrane and lumen by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Retrotranslocation of ubiquitinated substrates to the cytosol is a universal feature of ERAD?that requires the Cdc48 AAA-ATPase.
