Adaptive evolution of enzymes benefits from catalytic promiscuity. Sesquiterpene lactones (STLs) have diverged extensively in the Asteraceae, and studies of the enzymes for two representative STLs, costunolide and artemisinin, could provide an insight into the adaptive evolution of enzymes.
